Which PTE test do you need for the UK?
PTE Academic vs PTE Academic UKVI is a question about the evidence your application needs. Start with the course or visa route, then select the examination. A university offer and a visa application can involve different checks.
Before paying, ask: “Do I need a SELT Unique Reference Number for this application?” Pearson supplies it with the UKVI version. Confirm the answer with your sponsor or the official route guidance. Pearson explains the UKVI test here.
For some family, settlement and citizenship applications, the relevant option may be PTE Home A1, A2 or B1. These assess speaking and listening. PTE Home is a separate product; the name does not mean you sit it in your living room. Check the Home Office approved-test guidance for your application.
PTE Academic vs PTE Academic UKVI: the differences
| Feature | PTE Academic | PTE Academic UKVI |
|---|---|---|
| Content and scoring | Same examination | Same examination |
| Skills assessed | Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing | Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing |
| UK university admission | Check your course requirements | Check your course requirements |
| Four-skills UK SELT evidence | Not the UKVI SELT booking | Approved UKVI test with a SELT reference |
| Before you book | Confirm acceptance with your university | Confirm the visa route and approved centre |
The UKVI label does not make the questions easier or harder. Pearson confirms the same content, format and scoring, so Academic preparation materials cover the same task types. What must be correct is the booking and the evidence you receive.
PTE score for UK visas in 2026
There is no single PTE passing score for UK that covers every applicant. Visa English levels and university admission scores are different requirements. Check each relevant skill rather than relying only on the overall result.
| Application | English level | PTE requirement or next check |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa: below degree level, using a SELT | B1 | PTE Academic UKVI: 43 in each of the four skills. |
| Student visa: degree level or above | B2 | Pearson lists 59 in each skill as the B2 equivalent. A Higher Education Provider can assess English itself; follow its course and sponsorship requirements. |
| Skilled Worker: new applicants and most switches | B2 | When proving English with PTE: Academic UKVI, 59 in each skill. |
| Skilled Worker: qualifying existing holders | Transitional rules | Check previous permission and whether you need to prove English again before booking another test. |
Sources: GOV.UK Student visa requirements, GOV.UK Skilled Worker requirements and Pearson’s UK visa score table.
The Skilled Worker change to check
Current GOV.UK guidance requires B2 for new applicants and most visa switches. It states that people who held this visa before 8 January 2026 and are extending or updating it need B1 and do not need to prove English again. It also gives an exception for switching from a Health and Care Worker visa. Check your previous permission against the current rules.
You may qualify through another accepted form of English evidence. English is also only one part of an application: sponsorship, salary and other route conditions still apply.
Worked example: an applicant has a strong overall result but Reading is 58. That does not meet a requirement of 59 in every skill. Their immediate preparation priority is Reading, even if the overall score looks comfortably above the target.
PTE accepted universities in the UK: check the course
Start with Pearson’s accepting-institution directory, then verify the requirement on the university’s own course page. Being listed does not mean every department accepts the same score.
For example, the University of Manchester accepts PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI for relevant degree-level applications. Its guidance directs applicants to individual course requirements and specifies a SELT for separate, non-integrated foundation and pre-sessional courses. It excludes PTE Online.
For each application, record the exact test version, overall minimum, each component minimum, result-age rule and evidence needed for the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). If you plan a foundation course followed by a degree, check whether they form one integrated programme or separate courses.
Searching “UK universities accepting PTE 50” can help you discover options, but a generic list cannot confirm admission. Send the university your four component scores and exact course name. Ask for written confirmation before paying for an application based on an older summary.
PTE exam fees, dates and UKVI booking
PTE exam fees in India and PTE test fees in the UK depend on where you sit the exam. Use Pearson’s official test centres and fees finder, select the country and verify the exact test product. Confirm the final amount at checkout.
Our PTE exam fee guide covers India and Australia costs and cancellation examples. For a UKVI booking, still check the UKVI price shown for your selected country. Allow for travel, optional preparation and a possible retake as well as the headline exam fee.
- Confirm the accepted test with your university or official visa route guidance.
- Access myPTE through Pearson’s official site and choose the exact test name.
- Select the country, centre and available PTE exam date. A SELT requires an approved centre offering that test.
- Check your personal details and identification requirements before paying.
- Read the cancellation terms, complete payment and keep the appointment confirmation.
Follow Pearson’s booking instructions and the Home Office centre guidance. “PTE test centre near me” is a useful travel search, but proximity alone does not establish that a centre offers the right examination.
Dates depend on live availability. Under Pearson’s rescheduling policy, free rescheduling requires more than 14 full calendar days before the test. Later changes can require cancellation and a fresh booking with reduced or no refund. Leave time before your application deadline for results and another attempt if needed.
PTE results and score validity
Results usually arrive within two days, but Pearson says they can take up to five working days, with longer reviews possible. Treat “48-hour PTE results” as a typical turnaround rather than a guaranteed deadline. Check your myPTE account and Pearson’s scoring guidance if your result is delayed.
A PTE Score Report is valid for two years from the test date. The receiving organisation determines when it must be valid and how it must be supplied. Check the timing against both your application and course start.
When results arrive, compare every component with your checklist. Keep the required SELT reference available and complete the university’s score-sharing steps; downloading a report alone may not complete its process.
PTE exam pattern 2026: include the newer speaking tasks
PTE Academic and Academic UKVI now include Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. Pearson introduced these in its August 2025 update while retaining the original question types. See the official update and our current PTE exam format guide.
Older lessons can still help with familiar tasks, but using only the previous format leaves preparation gaps. For a discussion summary, distinguish the shared topic from each speaker’s contribution. For a situation response, identify the listener, purpose and appropriate tone.
Try Summarize Group Discussion practice and Respond to a Situation practice. Use a microphone and keyboard so that the delivery method becomes familiar before test day.
Free PTE practice tests and mock tests for your UK target
Use the free PTE practice tests on MocksPTE to work on individual tasks, then take a full PTE mock test to practise timing. MocksPTE is independent of Pearson. Practice scores are estimates, not official results or proof of visa eligibility.
You can also use Pearson’s official preparation resources. Check which materials are free and which scored practice products require payment.
- Diagnose: complete timed tasks and record errors by skill.
- Prioritise: compare your performance with every required component minimum, then focus on the largest gap.
- Practise: review why you missed an answer, work on that skill and try fresh questions.
- Recheck: complete another timed session after targeted work. Look for consistent performance across the required skills.
For speaking, listen back for unclear words, missing ideas and incomplete sentences. For writing, check that you answered the task before polishing vocabulary. For listening and reading, separate misunderstanding from timing and spelling errors. An error log gives each session a purpose.
No seven-day or thirty-day plan guarantees a PTE score. Adapt our PTE study plan to your starting level, target and available time. If you are still comparing examinations, use our PTE vs IELTS guide and check each accepted test’s own admission requirement.
