The score report
Your score report shows an overall score on a scale of 10 to 90, and four communicative skill scores on the same scale. The August 2025 update did not change this report.
There is no pass or fail. Each university, employer or government body sets its own minimum overall score, and some also set minimum skill scores. Requirements change, so always check the current figure directly with the organization you are applying to.
Integrated scoring: one answer, two skills
Many PTE questions test two skills at once, and your answer counts toward both skill scores. Repeat Sentence, for example, needs you to understand the audio (listening) and say it back (speaking).

This is why some tasks punch above their weight. Write from Dictation and Listening Fill in the Blanks both feed listening and writing, and Summarize Written Text feeds reading and writing.
What the scoring looks at
Speaking tasks such as Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation are assessed on content, pronunciation and oral fluency. Content is what you say; pronunciation is how clearly you say it; fluency is how smoothly you speak, without hesitation, repetition or long pauses.
Writing tasks are assessed on a set of factors. Summarize Written Text uses content, form, grammar and vocabulary. Write Essay uses seven: content, development and structure, form, general linguistic range, grammar, vocabulary range and spelling. Summarize Spoken Text uses content, form, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. Form is about following the rules of the task, mainly the word limits.
Partial credit and minus marking
Objective questions follow a few clear rules:
- Right or wrong only: Multiple Choice, Single Answer (reading and listening), Highlight Correct Summary and Select Missing Word.
- Partial credit: both reading fill in the blanks tasks and Reorder Paragraphs. You get credit for what you get right.
- Points per correct word: Listening Fill in the Blanks and Write from Dictation. Spelling must be correct.
- Minus marking: Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers (reading and listening) and Highlight Incorrect Words. Each wrong selection cancels a correct one, and a question cannot score below zero.
The practical lesson: guess freely on single-answer and fill in the blanks questions, but on minus-marked questions select only what you are confident about.
Automated and human scoring since 2025
PTE Academic has always used automated scoring. Since 7 August 2025, some responses are also part-scored by trained human raters. Pearson says humans never score pronunciation or fluency, which stay automated. Responses that appear heavily templated or memorized may be flagged. Clear structure is still useful, but content should respond to the actual question.
How MocksPTE estimates scores
MocksPTE is not Pearson and cannot reproduce Pearson's scoring. Our practice scores are simpler and labeled as estimates:
- Reading and listening questions are marked with the partial credit and minus marking rules above.
- Writing is checked for word limits, form, structure, vocabulary variety and coverage of key ideas. Grammar and spelling are not graded.
- Speaking is checked from a transcript made by your browser's speech recognition: words matched for Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence, and key points covered in longer answers. Pronunciation and fluency are not measured.
In mock tests, these results are converted to a 10 to 90 estimate for each skill using the same skill contributions as the real test. Use the estimate to track your progress over time, not to predict an exact official score.
