PTE for Nursing in Australia 2027: Your Preparation Guide

Preparing for nursing registration in Australia in 2027? Start with your English evidence pathway, your application date and the gaps in your current PTE skills. This guide turns those checks into a practical preparation plan you can fit around work or study.

Planning for 2027: which Ahpra English requirements apply?

Requirements checked: 28 October 2026. This is a preparation guide for people planning a 2027 application, not an announcement of new 2027 rules. The official guidance located for this article describes the changes effective from 23 April 2026. Recheck it before booking and before applying.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) sets the nursing registration standard, administered by Ahpra. PTE is one English evidence option; an English test is not required for every applicant. First check your pathway in the NMBA English language skills FAQ.

Make a planning sheet with four entries: the organisation requesting evidence, your intended application date, the evidence pathway you will use and any existing test dates. This keeps your preparation tied to an actual application instead of a generic score goal.

What PTE score is required for nursing in Australia?

Under the current single-sitting rules for tests taken on or after 23 April 2026, PTE Academic requires 63 overall, Listening 58, Reading 59, Writing 60 and Speaking 76. Ahpra accepts the test-centre version. Source: Ahpra accepted English language tests.

Use these as the current planning baseline, not a guarantee of the rules for a future application. Our PTE score for nursing in Australia guide contains the detailed score tables, older-test rules and combination examples.

A blanket target of “PTE 65 each” would leave Speaking below the current single-sitting requirement. Write your individual targets beside your actual results. Highlight the unmet conditions rather than concentrating only on your overall score.

Nursing registration, a 2027 nursing intake and a visa: separate your checks

Your preparation depends on what you are applying for. A Bachelor of Nursing place, a Master of Nursing place and professional registration are different applications. Do not assume that a university offer settles your registration English evidence.

  • Nursing course entry: find the English requirements for the exact course and 2027 intake. Save the university page and any written clarification about accepted tests or evidence dates.
  • Ahpra nursing registration: check the NMBA pathway and the complete evidence conditions that apply to you.
  • An Australian visa: check the relevant Home Affairs criteria separately. Our Australia PTE score requirements guide helps distinguish the main categories.

If you intend to use one result for several applications, keep separate columns for each organisation. Compare both scores and timing conditions before deciding on your test date.

PTE validity for Ahpra: when should you take the test?

The NMBA normally requires results from the two years before your registration application. When relying on two sittings, the earlier test starts that period. Exceptions for older evidence have additional conditions; review the NMBA FAQ rather than assuming work or study automatically extends a result.

Work backwards from your intended 2027 application month. Set aside time for preparation, receiving results, checking documents and another attempt if needed. Your personal buffer should reflect your starting level and available appointments; there is no single booking date suitable for everyone.

Example: planning an application for September 2027

A nurse could use April to review the current requirements and complete a diagnostic, May and June for focused practice, and July for a first planned test if ready. August would provide some room to review the result and decide on next steps. These are suggested planning months, not official deadlines or a promise that a retake will be available.

If you already have a result, check its exact date before paying for another test. For a nursing course, also check whether the university measures evidence age against application, enrolment or course commencement.

PTE Speaking 76 for nursing: build a focused practice routine

Start with a recording, not a memorised script. Complete a few different speaking tasks and listen once for meaning, then again for delivery. Can a listener follow your main point? Which words are unclear? Do you restart repeatedly or rush the final sentence?

Choose one recurring issue for each session. For pauses, practise speaking in short meaningful phrases. For rushed delivery, shorten the answer while keeping its important details. For unclear words, check the pronunciation, say the word in a phrase and record the full answer again.

  • Describe Image: identify the subject, select the main features and explain a useful comparison.
  • Retell Lecture: organise notes around the main idea and supporting details, then check whether your recording preserves their meaning.
  • Respond to a Situation: identify who you are speaking to, your purpose and the details the listener needs.
  • Summarize Group Discussion: track the speakers' positions and explain where they agree or differ.

A short response exercise

Practice scenario: a classmate asks to move a study session to a time when you are working. Explain the conflict and suggest another time.

Example response: “I am working on Thursday evening, so I cannot meet at six. Could we study on Friday morning instead? I can bring my notes, and we could review the presentation together.”

This original exercise illustrates a clear purpose, relevant explanation and next step. It is not an official test question or a scored model answer. Use the same planning process on a different prompt, rather than memorising these words. Our PTE speaking fluency tips provide more drills.

A four-week PTE study plan around nursing shifts

This is a suggested starting routine, not a guaranteed route to a score. Schedule demanding practice when you are rested. On a tiring workday, a short review of previous errors may be more useful than an unrevised full mock.

  1. Week 1: diagnose. Try all four skills, learn the PTE Academic format and record your speaking. Keep an error log with the task, the mistake and one correction.
  2. Week 2: repair. Work on your weakest skill each study day. Add short maintenance practice for the others, including spelling, sentence construction and careful listening.
  3. Week 3: apply under time limits. Use unfamiliar questions. Check whether improvements survive without rehearsing the same response repeatedly.
  4. Week 4: rehearse and review. Take a free PTE mock test when rested, review the errors and decide what still needs work before booking or sitting the real test.

For a 30-minute session, try five minutes reviewing an earlier correction, fifteen minutes on focused tasks and ten minutes checking and repeating the weakest response. Use a longer session on a suitable day for a complete test. Extend the plan if your difficulties persist.

MocksPTE practice feedback is not an official Pearson score and cannot establish Ahpra eligibility or guarantee Speaking 76. Use it to find patterns in your work. The four-week PTE study guide gives additional scheduling ideas.

Can you combine two PTE results for nursing registration?

Current Ahpra rules allow a maximum of two sittings within 12 months, subject to overall scores, skill targets and minimum scores in both sittings. You cannot simply pick the highest score in every column and ignore the rest. See Ahpra's combination conditions.

Before planning a retake, put both complete reports and test dates together. Use our two-sitting checklist for nursing, including its lower-limit table. For example, improving Speaking alone will not repair a pair that fails another mandatory condition.

Keep practising all four skills between attempts. Give extra time to the weak area, but do not abandon the skills that must remain above the required floors. If your tests span a rule change, consult the applicable transition guidance before relying on the pair.

Your 2027 nursing PTE preparation checklist

  • Identify whether you need evidence for course entry, registration, a visa or more than one application.
  • Confirm your English evidence pathway before assuming you must take a test.
  • Check the current requirements and record when you checked them.
  • Compare existing results and exact test dates with every applicable condition.
  • Build a practice routine around the gaps in your own work.
  • Leave time to review results and resolve missing evidence before applying.
  • Recheck official guidance before your 2027 application.

Your next practical step is a short diagnostic. Try the PTE speaking practice and one exercise in each other skill, then choose the first recurring error to fix. A specific correction gives tomorrow's study session a clear purpose.

Frequently asked questions

Are there new PTE requirements for nursing in Australia in 2027?
